چکیده

C1402 is fixed in pyrimidines of nucleic acids by Brucella abortus, strain 6232, during growth on complex artificial media (Newton et al., 1954). The incorporation of C02 into pyrimidines appears to be more obligatory in this strain of B. abortus which requires an increased pCO2 than it is in Escherichia coli (Bolton et al., 1952); a finding which suggested that strains of B. abortus which require for growth a partial pressure of CO2 above that in air might lack the ability to utilize exogenous pyrimidines for nucleic acid synthesis. It is known (Ruwet, 1951) that exogenous pyrimidines will not substitute for the increased pCO2 requirement. This could constitute a basic metabolic difference between strains of B. abortus which require an increased PCO2 in air for growth and those strains which grow in air, the latter synthesizing nucleic acid pyrimidines from the free bases and the former requiring C02 for these syntheses. The experiments described in the present communication were designed to test this hypothesis.

The role of innate immune signals in immunity to Brucella abortus

Innate immunity serves as the first line of defense against infectious agents such as intracellular bacteria. The innate immune platform includes Toll-like receptors (TLRs), retinoid acid-inducible gene-I-like receptors and other cytosolic nucleic acid sensors, nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain-like receptors, adaptors, kinases and other signaling molecules that are required to elic...

Improved Immunogenicity of Tetanus Toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS Adjuvant

Background: Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram nega...

Genetic organization and iron-responsive regulation of the Brucella abortus 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid biosynthesis operon, a cluster of genes required for wild-type virulence in pregnant cattle.

Brucella abortus reportedly produces the monocatechol siderophore 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) in response to iron limitation. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cloned DHBA biosynthesis locus from virulent B. abortus 2308 and genetic complementation of defined Escherichia coli mutants were used to identify the B. abortus genes (designated dhbC, -B, and -A) responsible for synthesis of...

Studies on the nutrition of Brucella melitensis.

Koser, Breslove, and Doirfman (1941) obtained moderate growth (one billion cells per ml) of the three species, Brucella melitensis, Brucella abortus, and Brucella suis, in a chemically defined medium consisting of 17 amino acids, glucose, inorganic salts, thiamin, nicotinamide, biotin, and pantothenic acid. All of the strains studied required thiamin and nicotinamide, and all weere stimulated b...

The oxidation of glutamic acid by Brucella abortus.

The oxidation of glutamic acid by avirulent strains of Brucella abortus is the most rapid respiratory process thus far studied in this species (Gerhardt et al., 1950a). Furthermore, glutamic acid will serve as the sole source of both carbon and nitrogen for all strains of B. abortus which have been tested (Gerhardt et al., 1950b). Glutamic acid is important in the synthesis of other amino acids...
